What a Repost Cannot do for You

2 min read

Last two nights, I read an Islamic quote which says… ‘I am three persons: The person others think I am; The person I think I am; the person God knows I am’.

The first caught my attention more. What do others think about you? You know it varies per individual right? So hence my big question! When you repost encomiums or brickbats showered on you by an individual to the public, what exactly is your intention?

Often times I see people reposting their birthday messages from well-wishers on various social media platforms, reposting several mentions that puts them in a favourable light, portrays them as woke and what have you. All the time I am thinking to myself: “What is this person’s aim?”

It can’t save you bro

We all wanna look cool to everyone Yeah. Wow! A friend just mentioned you as one of the most intelligent humans they have ever met and the first thing that comes to your mind is…”O boy! I should repost this, everyone on my list ought to know how intelligent I am”…and off you go Felicia😌

Hollop! Let me tell you one salient truth, A repost of encomiums or brickbats cannot change how other individuals on your timeline feel about you. They might be tempted to channel their thoughts about you in that direction, but it is only temporary. What you give to them is what is permanent. If you have been foolish to me and you make a repost of someone emphasizing how sage you are, not sorry but that is for the person, not me.

Bottom line: A repost is only a lopsided opinion, it remains a credibility gap until proven otherwise. You cannot lobby the chronicles of your so-called credibility via a repost.

Whenever a friend extols how sagacious I am on social media, I take such compliments with a pinch of salt, especially if the person has never complimented me to my face. Even if I am certain about the genuineness of a compliment, I do not see the need to repost it or share it.
