“He’s God, I can’t defend him”- Christians

I’ve seen atheists effortlessly defend the notion that there is no God. I’ve seen the zeal in their eyes when they say “I know there is a supreme being but it’s definitely not someone sitting in the sky”. How about you dear Christians? To what extent can you brag that God exists?

A lot of ‘Christians’ become speechless especially on social media when it is necessary to defend what they believe in, they stay under the guise that “you cannot defend God”. I know you cannot defend God but you can defend what you believe. It is important to note that most atheists were once ‘strong’ Christians or would I say believers who after much trying stumbled upon several reasons to stop believing in the existence of what they often call an ‘abstract’ being. Their belief system changed.

The 5 C's of Preaching

I remember a movie I saw in 2014 titled ‘God’s not dead’ by Micheal Scott. Josh Wheaton, a Christian, enrolled in a philosophy class taught by Professor Joffrey Radisson, a staunch atheist. The professor required everyone to write on a plain sheet that “God is dead”, that was the only way to pass that class. Josh refuses and the Professor challenged him to a debate to prove the existence of God.

It would have been easy as a believer to walk away from that class and say “lead us not into temptation” or “I cannot defend God” but Josh saw that over 200 students were going to deny the existence of God so they can pass the course. It is also easy to confess that God is dead then go home to ask God for forgiveness, at least he’s a merciful father. But Josh knew what he believed in and was ready to defend it even when failure was staring at him in his face.

It would have also been easy to leave the class after Josh’s girlfriend, Kara had to break up with him over his madness but there was a bigger picture. Josh went back home to soak himself into an intense study of the word, searching and asking questions. Although the professor was able to counter all of Josh’s points in the first two rounds of debates, in the final debate, Josh was able to prove not just to the professor but also to the whole class that there is a God.

A lot of so called ‘believers’ find it difficult to speak about their beliefs because they only know the God of the Bible, they don’t know God for themselves. When there is a little counter opinion to what they know, they are easily swayed by it and then they resolve to make statements like  “he’s God, he can defend himself” or “I wont be caught arguing for God” or worse still they shut you up and warn you not to question what you can’t understand. Was it not the same God that gave us brains to think?

A lot of believers find it difficult to speak about their beliefs because they only know the God of the Bible, they don’t know God for themselves

As believers, it is important to soak yourself in intense study of the word. It is important to also search far and wide so as to encounter him because a day will come when your faith will be tested just like Jesus in the wilderness and God help you not to fall flat on your face. You don’t defend God but you defend what you believe. Imagine how many souls would have been lost if Josh behaved as you do and didn’t stand up for God. The professor would have polluted the mind of the other students and there would have been no revival.

Your voice as a believer can bring revival to the soul of many, quit being a Sunday Christian alone because a time will come when your gold will be put into the fire. In this lockdown, begin to seek the Lord for yourself so that he can reveal dimensions of his glory to you. Stop being a quiet Christain! Feed yourself with his words! Be defensive for Christ if you have to.

I think you’re confusing the job of a Christian which is to preach the gospel to non-believers, with arguing with an atheist. Trying to defend God is like trying to defend a lion, she doesn’t need your help, just unlock the cage. Bragging about God is what every Believer should do, but arguing is a choice. How many time did Jesus defend himself or God? God didn’t send you to defend or argue, the atheist cause is to look for people to argue with that there isn’t God, if there are no people to argue with, then they are not… Read more »

I think you got the writer’s angle mixed up along the line. What is the difference between an atheist and a non-believer? It’s not also about whether Jesus defended himself or God, it is about what the world is today. Christians need to speak up! If defending what you believe in is the only opinion you have, will you walk away or affirm it? Needful to say that the writer didn’t come from a point of attack on Christians but a wake-up call. The last two paragraph sums it all. Lastly, welcome Jwhite, we look forward to more of your… Read more »

IF is a conditional statement, thank God that defending what I believe in isn’t the only way to affirm it. I’m of the school of thought that states ‘instead of spending time arguing or criticizing what you don’t like, spend that time in growing, looking for solutions and talking to people about what you like’, you start to argue with these folks or try to defend God which I don’t see the point, you could get distracted from the actual job God sent us, which doesn’t involve defending him, before you know, you go too far, you get to a… Read more »

Thank you Jwhite.
If you were in Josh’s shoes, what would you have done as a Christian especially when you see about 200 souls about to perish?
Christians are not to go around blabbing all in the name of “defense” but when it is time to stand for what you believe in, do it unapologetically.

Thank you for reading 😊😊

When people ask questions, their motives differ. When arguments are raised about one’s faith, the purpose is not always to edify. It is not always to gain insight/knowledge. It is sometimes to create vain contradictions. It is with wisdom and knowledge of the word of God that one can stand boldly and speak about God and any confusions any questions might raise. Not everyone is that knowledgeable, and it is okay to choose not to speak of something you know not yet. It is still wisdom and knowledge that makes one, despite their deep insights, to still avoid discussions that… Read more »

I like your analysis but to we both know not everyone asks questions to stir controversy. It is even because of the dodgy nature of some Christians that make the non-believers persist.

Not to prolong matters, I will just stick to your conclusion. Thank you👌

You can’t give what you don’t have, most Christiandom rely heavily on their pastor to guide/teach them the word of God. Most people don’t create time to really study the bible and do further research. That is why they are easily manipulated, this is the reason churches is one of most lucrative business we have in this country, pastors will come up with some bullshit and the flocks will take it like that without further study or research. An average jehovah’s witness can defend what they believe in, not even the elders can convince them otherwise. If you believe God… Read more »

Like the writer stated, “Know God for your self not God for the Bible”. Can anyone give what they don’t have? This is a wake-up call.🤗

That sentence is very wrong! It is unscriptural and it is one of the main reasons, we have all manners of ridiculous doctrines among Christians today! Some folks, have come out to say plenty of thi gs contrary to the scriptures, but would claim God told them so. In the Christian faith, you don’t know God for yourself, you know God of the Bible. The Bi le is the supreme in the faith. Whatever contradicts it, is not for the faith! Cos, it is the Bible that authentic, God in every “knowing”. There are many faith in the world today,… Read more »

It is very important to know God for yourself especially in our world today when churches are “in the name of God Plc”.

Another thing that needs to be addressed is how some Christians turn to abuse or guilt trip when people ask certain questions, instead of giving calm and logical explanations with care or love. Forgetting that God is love.
We need orientation on a lot of things. For example, with the number of churches we have; if we were Christ-like, the country would progress. Because without government needing to do anything, we would come together and make our own lives better

Some of the answers beats logic, ..so it would be unfair to seek a logical answer.

I agree with that, but for example; 1. Science has revealed the type of oil used by the Jews is the best because it does not clot the arteries. 2. Science of evolution agrees with the story of Creation, atleast the order of creation. These few examples are enough to show that there is logic to it, to some extent. Yes, we cannot comprehend everything but then it’s better to admit that fact when you don’t have the answer, then go research and find it. I feel there are no many opportunities for christians to discuss the bible and get… Read more »

Christianity is becoming insecure. You raise a question and you get attacked, where is the love of Christ in all these? If we claim some answers beat logic, do we also claim that logical questions get the required answers every time they come up?

Christians that guilt trip do not really understand when to keep quiet.
In multitude of words, sin abide. It is important to know when to speak and when to keep quiet, it is also important to portray love in our speech.

Thank you once again

Wow! This is explicit. Why should we be afraid if we truly believe in God? I personally feel that often times when people respond to altar calls, they really do not have an understanding of the commitment, dedication and the loyalty that is expected of them. They don’t count the cost! Accepting the love of God includes accepting to be his ambassador whenever and wherever. Haven’t we heard of terrorists whose minds have been made up? I am not ashamed of the Gospel of Christ for it is the power of God unto salvation in whatever situation I find myself.… Read more »

1Pet.3.15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear; (NKJV) 1Pet.3.15 But in your hearts set Christ apart as holy [and acknowledge Him] as Lord. Always be ready to give a logical defense to anyone who asks you to account for the hope that is in you, but do it courteously and respectfully. (AMP) 1Pet.3.15 Instead, you must worship Christ as Lord of your life. And if you are asked about your Christian hope,… Read more »
