Hypocrites! Homosexuality is not a crime

Ain’t we all hypocrites?  Let us not stress it too much, most times when people want to relate with hypocrisy, it is always about our faith- how as a Christian or Muslim, you have faulted in ways that prove you to be one who has flaws, but let’s take a shift from the whole story to a reality that we choose not to talk about in the mundane Nigerian society. “Gays and Lesbians are humans, and some of them happen to be Nigerians too, how is it that we don’t hear about them as we hear about the LGBTQ community in America?” We are hypocrites!

Just recently, it became a criminal act under section 214 of the Criminal Code, that people of the same sex be found indulging in love related kinds of relationships. This is little compared to the Sharia law on LGBTQ.

While this might seem typical and normal to most of us, we should also know that this doesn’t mean that there are no homosexuals in the country, we just choose not to recognize them because of some beliefs that we have accepted over time.

One fundamental aspect of the constitution of the country is the right to freedom of expression. It is the freedom of expression that allows a person to be able to make a choice of his or her own partner. For crying out loud, Nigeria is regarded as a secular country, and by default, what I accept as the right shouldn’t in any way affect you because we are relative beings with relative minds.

Personally, I feel that we have gone too far by making homosexuality a criminal offense, and the 14 years sentence is just the height of it. Let us think about it logically, when a person commits a crime, it is often said that such a person contravenes the rights of the generality of humans residing in a locality- in this case, Nigeria. How does one person being a lesbian or gay, make him a criminal to be likened to a killer or an Armed robber? This is no doubt the height of our hypocrisy.

When two people of the same sex agree to a date and love each other in sickness and in health, for better or worse, it becomes a union bound by consent. It becomes a typical marriage that was entered into by right-thinking minds who are able to make decisions for themselves and for their future. However, when we take a stance against these people just because they are of the same sex, what does it say about us? Ain’t we all hypocrites?

It’s no news that most Nigerians are homo-phobic and they tend to get repulsive when such issues are raised or when they come in contact with someone they think is Gay. Everyone should have the right to freely express themselves and love whomever they want to love cos right now a lot of men/women are literally stucked in a love-less marriage just because of the norms in the society and the will to have children.

It is never and will never be wrong to love whom you choose to love. Let it be human or animal but to have sexual affection to your gender or same sex is Evil. It simply means you have given your mind and thoughts to the devil. And to even consent and agree with those who indulge in these acts simply explains who you are and what side you’re on. As for me; I’m on God’s side on this matter

You’re welcome admin This truly has nothing to do with belief system. It is morally wrong, mentally wrong, naturally wrong and spiritually not acceptable. How have we choose to live as a society? We have laws that regulate us as a people and in the eyes of the law marriage is between a man and a woman so when you break this law you become a criminal. Why should a person who was given birth to by a man and woman just wake up and say he or she wants to marry same sex and we feel it’s cool to… Read more »

While the jail term is an extreme, I feel the idea of freedom is something getting us in trouble, it starts with one thing then it opens a vortex or wormhole of never ending issues. Look at the transgender, transage and other situations that have evolved over time. From fixing the things we have issues with, man now wants to play God, this will result in completely distorting what is natural and normal. While I agree some traditions are ancient and can be fixed or changed, some actually are for our good. Let’s be honest, if we accept some of… Read more »

While I didn’t write this, I’m somewhat on the side of the writer. Sometimes I have this weird feeling that LGBTQ rights will one day be legal in Nigeria. Like you said Nigeria is a far cry away from the development of America, so I’m thinking, among the 99 problems we got, should homosexuals be taken keenly? I feel it’s trivial. Maybe I undermine the possible consequences, or maybe there might just be none. THANK YOU SEYI👌

Homosexuality is a deviant practice and it is against the natural order. We shouldn’t try to normalize it because the white man has normalized it. You talk about freedom but you fail to understand that freedom doesn’t give us the blank cheque to go against the norms and mores of society. That’s why a father and his daughter who has reached the age of consent are prohibited from having an incestuous relationship. Can it be argued that since they are consenting adults, they should be free to do whatever they like? We, black people, don’t have a mind of our… Read more »

Thank you Darius. While all this is said, we all have what we stand for. And while it might be deviant and an all white man’s thing to you, another feels there should be no hiccup. I enjoyed reading your opinion, I’m sure the writer Femi is taking notes too.👌

Well to be candid. Homosexuality might not be a crime or an abomination. Only that we as humans especially Africa’s have been conditioned to see & think about things in the same way. One example of this is religion. Religion goes against this, as they perceive it has sinned. While on the other hand, tradition & culture sees it as an evil act. So, are they to be blamed for their belief🤷🏾‍♀? Well, I think the greatest answer to the question will be that; what are your beliefs?

I AM HOMOPHOBIC If I say it is unnatural, you’d say what defines natural for me doesn’t define it for my neighbor. If I say it is unholy, you’d ask me if every activity I am involved in is holy. If I tell that when same sex couple marry and decide to have kids, they realise they can’t and just have to employ folks who go “natural” to do it for them, you’d remind me that even “natural couple” also use surrogates. However, while we applaud folks who have come out of the closet and places that have upheld “the… Read more »

Your first two paragraphs said it all. Generally, you reminded me of the several cultural shocks that man is faced with. Like the saying, one man’s poison is another man’s food. We are woke and can be blind too, it all depends on the yardstick. Thank you🤗

Who ever wrote this must be gay. Man was not born to be gay. It is orientation from the media and public that’s making more people to think they may be gay. Every physical and sexual structure of a man or woman shows that it needs the opposite sex for sex. A dick is structured for a pussy and not an asshole can’t you see? Why do lesbians still use a toy dick during intercourse. Can’t you see its not natural? Am not even coming from the religious aspect. There is no harm in loving someone of the same sex… Read more »

Point of correction! Animals also exhibit homosexual behaviour even with a greater sexual diversity compared to humans. Make your research. In my opinion, homosexuality is considered a sin against nature by the majority because of the rigidity of their minds. It’s more like a culture shock to them. Ok, take for instance the Barrios of Venezuela, where every man who sleeps with a woman while she is pregnant is considered the father of the child. This is common practice over there so that every child knows no lack because they are properly catered for by different fathers. A commonality to… Read more »

I know about that of some species of monkeys that does that but it’s a form of recorgnision among members of the carload, fun and relaxation but when it’s time for intimacy and reproduction, they don’t meet the same sex. also when they find a mate for life it is not of the same sex. It is not nature. I still stand my ground that nobody is born gay. They have just fed their minds with orientation from media and the public on LGBT. I mean it’s everywhere in movies on the news in the society even in schools, then… Read more »

Homosexuality is not a choice. Most people are born that way, from childhood they are only attracted to the same sex. Although orientation/environment have a roll to play in the increasing number of homosexuality but mostly it comes natural to them just like it’s natural for a straight person to be attracted to the opposite sex. We shouldn’t judge or look down on them, at times I thank God I am straight. With all the problem in our society adding homosexuality to it is tough. Personally I do not like the act/practice of homosexuality but doesn’t give me the right… Read more »

I would never pretend or stand for homosexuality it’s not right before God and Man the punishment may be undeserving but surely shouldn’t be tolerated in this part of the world cos we abuse everything

Abuse everything? This goes beyond abuse, a man who is straight would not come out as gay simply because it’s been made legal.

As much as everyone has a right to be whatever they want to be, homosexuality should never be welcomed. Morals shouldn’t be overlooked as much as we try not to be hypocritical. It’s dumb to think sticking ones dinghy in a dude’s ass is normal. It’s immoral and I think 14 years is not enough. Maybe they should spend their lives in a mental institution till they are straight and not a prison tho.

I wasn’t going to say anything about this topic but from all the comments I see, I think it’s expedient that my view be heard. First of all, from scientific researches, it’s important to note that many males are born with the XXY chromosome, which simply means they are born gay. Many females also have the innate proclivities of homosexuality and bisexuality. Secondly, for something to be considered a crime, it should be something that directly harms somebody else or compromises the peace of the community. Homosexuality does not fit into that box! To be a properly civilized country, it’s… Read more »

Hmm. I disagree with the statement made in the second paragraph. The ‘XXY’ chromosomal abnormality also known as Klinefelter’s syndrome does not mean such an individual is gay. It is a syndrome presenting with a range of symptoms such as sterility, amongst other features. That being said, concerning marriage, I believe you opined that the original purpose of marriage in short can be summarize into establishment of order, preservation of bloodline as well as companionship. I partially agree with this, maybe not in the same sense as you, but it doesn’t prove your point. From my knowledge from reading historical… Read more »
