The Top is a Mirage, No one can get there, Not even you

Yesterday I saw a friend’s tweet which read “Everyone falls for more… be it more money, intelligence, looks or whatsoever value touches your core! Strive for more, chase more, be more!” …I couldn’t agree more with the tweet.

The need to become more than what we already are has subjected us to not just an overboard of pressure but honest fears too. Take for example me. My life is a Temple Run.  I have this conviction that there is a figurative beast chasing me about with an axe, and the moment I relent, he strikes me dead, hence I keep running.

No matter the stage I’m at, I keep wanting more and more and I’m sure it happens to you too. Everyone falls into the temptation of believing that there is a certain peak they ought to reach but why is it that whenever we get there, another target surfaces and then we resume the chase again?

I have observed my environment with the people in it, I have also read historicals and watched documentaries about other environments too and one thing is certain, changeless evolution.

Not once, have I met a man who wanted to be less than he already is or is satisfied with how he currently is. No, wait! I have met satisfied men and women before, who wouldn’t mind how much they earned but notwithstanding went about their doings, but guess what! they only existed in folklores my grandmother never had the time to tell me. Maybe they once existed in our world but trust me they are extinct now. Or have you ever seen an intelligent man who doesn’t want more knowledge? Or a rich man who doesn’t want more money?

The 'Top' Is A Mirage
Eventually, when he gets there, he will only realize that there is, in fact, another ‘Top’ he has to get to.

But frankly, I am losing my self peace in this war for more, O yes! it is a war, an unending one at that. No matter how I channel my mind to be content with the knowledge, money, clothes, finesse and all that I have, I keep failing at it.

Could it be that the world order has placed me in a subconscious competition with myself? could it be a conscious competition with the people who live in this world with me?

I will ask like Bobby Ray asked, “Is there really a top or that’s the way we’ve been trained to view it?”  because every time I hear a man say that he’s headed for the top, I always wonder which ‘Top’ because eventually when he gets there, he will only realize that there is, in fact, another ‘Top’ he has to get to. And there goes the endless craze, our needs can never hit the bullseye, it’s impossible. For every time a man wakes up daily, he sees that the bar has moved by an upward trajectory.

There is no Top, we cannot get there, it’s only a mirage.

I’ve come to realize we are never satisfied. I think we humans were just created that way, there is no “top” even at retirement age you still see people trying so hard to get more riches, more knowledge etc.

Human needs are infinite. As we progress in life, our taste change. We want to drive the latest cars, have houses in top cities around the world and make lucrative investments here and there. And when we realize how money makes life worth living and how people hero-worship us, we work harder to acquire more so we don’t fall from grace. The fear of poverty is what propels a lot of people to strive for more even when they have amassed a fortune. I once asked a nouveau riche why he was always working his ass to get more when he… Read more »

I read in a sociology text early in school that for whatever problem you’ve solved comes fresh problems that requires new solutions. Contentment is a beautiful gift, which people are seldom given. Even when you desire it, the amount of exposure you’ve got to the influence of your immediate environment alters your decision to not seek more and more.. And a little bit more. I am looking at this from the perspective of needs. When you’re earning 100k for instance and you spend it on your young wife and yourself alone, you feel that though this suffices for now, it… Read more »
